Using amlodipine and olmesartan (Azor)
Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed a combination medication to treat your hypertension. This medication contains a calcium channel blocker, amlodipine, which helps your blood vessels to relax and lowers blood pressure; and an angiotensin II receptor blocker, olmesartan, which blocks a normal body reflex that usually raises blood pressure. By acting at two sites to lower pressure, this medication may be more effective than using one medication alone. The brand name of this medication is Azor.
How you'll take Azor
You'll take Azor once daily, at the same time each day. You may also be taking other medications to lower your blood pressure.
What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Take the next dose at the regular time. Don't take more than one dose per day.
What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication.
Common: dizziness, swelling, low blood pressure.
Less common: rash, muscle weakness, headache.
What you must know about other medications
The effectiveness of this medication may be changed if it's taken with certain other medications. Though no specific drug interactions have been reported, it's important to tell all of your health care providers that you're taking this medication.
Special directions
- Take this medication once daily, at about the same time each day. You can take this medication with or without food, but should maintain the same pattern once you start taking the medication.
- You may also be taking other medications to control your blood pressure; consult your health care provider and follow your medication regimen as directed.
- You may experience low blood pressure if you become dehydrated or very warm. If you feel faint or dizzy, lie down and contact your health care provider right away.
Keep in mind
- This medication shouldn't be taken during pregnancy; use of contraceptive measures is advised. If you wish to become pregnant, consult your health care provider. If you become pregnant while taking Azor, stop the taking the medication and consult your health care provider about alternative treatments.
- It isn't known how this medication could affect a breastfed baby. Because of the potential for serious adverse effects on an infant, another method of feeding the baby should be used while you're taking this medication.
- Your health care provider will monitor your blood pressure regularly while you're on this medication.
- Report severe swelling, muscle pain with fever, dizziness, and chest pain.
