Taking fesoterodine fumarate (Toviaz)

Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed fesoterodine fumarate to help manage your urinary symptoms. This drug relieves your symptoms by increasing your bladder capacity and improving muscle contractions in the bladder. The brand name of the drug is Toviaz.

How you'll take fesoterodine
Take this drug about the same time each day. You may take the drug with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; don't cut, crush, or chew the tablet.

What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, just skip the missed dose. Don't make up the dose. Don't take more than one dose per day.

What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication.
Common: dry mouth.
Less common: back pain; constipation; difficulty urinating; dry eyes; dry throat; indigestion; insomnia; nausea; swelling of the feet, legs, and ankles; rash; upper respiratory infection; urinary tract infection.

What you must know about other medications and alcohol
There are many drugs that could cause problems if you combine them with this drug, especially:

  • ketoconazole
  • clarithromycin
  • itraconazole
  • erythromycin.
You may also experience increased mental changes with alcohol. Tell any health care provider who takes care of you that you're taking this drug.

Special directions

  • Avoid driving, operating hazardous machinery, or doing dangerous activities until you know how this drug affects you.
  • Tell your health care provider if you have stomach or intestinal problems, constipation, difficulty emptying your bladder, a weak urine stream, glaucoma, kidney or liver problems, or myasthenia gravis.
  • Tell your health care provider if you're pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or if you’re breast-feeding.

Keep in mind

  • Be careful in hot environments. You're susceptible to decreased sweating and severe heat illness while taking this drug.
