
Taking febuxostat (Uloric)
Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed febuxostat to treat your gout. This drug is used to lower your blood uric acid levels. The brand name of this drug is Uloric.
How you'll take febuxostat
Take this drug about the same time each day. You may take it with or without food.
What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, just skip the missed dose. Don't try to make up doses. Don't take more than one dose per day.
What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this drug.
Less common: joint pain, nausea, rash.
What you must know about other medications
Serious problems may occur if you combine this drug with other drugs, especially:
- azathioprine
- mercaptopurine
- theophylline.
Tell any health care provider who takes care of you that you're taking this drug.
Special directions
- You may experience gout flares during the first 6 weeks of treatment. Don't stop taking the drug; instead, take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen (Motrin), or the antigout drug colchicine, as prescribed.
- You'll need blood testing to monitor your kidney and liver function periodically during therapy. Be sure to tell your health care provider if you have kidney or liver disease.
- Tell your health care provider if you have any heart conditions. This drug may increase your risk of heart attack or stroke.
- If this drug upsets your stomach, you may take antacids to relieve this discomfort.
Keep in mind
- It isn't known whether this drug affects an unborn child. You should use contraceptive measures while you're on this drug. If you become pregnant while taking this drug, consult with your health care provider.
- It isn't known if this drug appears in breast milk. Tell your health care provider if you're breast-feeding.
