Responding to reports of life-threatening adverse events, including fatal respiratory depression, the Food and Drug Administration is highlighting how to safely use Tussionex Pennkinetic Extended-Release Suspension. Most important are these instructions:

Don't give Tussionex to children younger than age 6.

Stress to patients that Tussionex can't be taken more than once every 12 hours.

Teach patients how to measure the correct dose, and make sure they use a calibrated measuring device.

A long-acting antitussive–antihistamine, each teaspoon (5 ml) of Tussionex contains hydrocodone polistirex (equivalent to 10 mg of hydrocodone bitartrate) and chlorpheniramine polistirex (equivalent to 8 mg of chlorpheniramine maleate). Tussionex is indicated for relief of cough and upper respiratory symptoms from allergy or cold in adults and children age 6 and older. Each dose provides up to 12 hours of cough relief.
