Prilosec, Nexium, and Cardiac Events

After two small, long-term studies suggested that long-term use of omeprazole (Prilosec) or esomeprazole (Nexium) might increase the risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death in patients with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) undertook an extensive review of additional data submitted by the drug maker.
FDA officials have now completed their review of that data and at least 14 additional studies and found no increased incidence of cardiovascular events in long-term Prilosec and Nexium therapy. They concluded that long-term use of these drugs isn't likely to increase the risk of heart problems, and they recommend that health care providers continue to prescribe these drugs as described in their labeling.
Prilosec and Nexium are proton pump inhibitors used to treat symptoms of GERD and other disorders of excessive stomach acid.
