NEW WARNING
Roche has issued a “Dear Healthcare Professional” letter about safety issues related to their antiviral medication oseltamivir (Tamiflu). Reports of neurological and behavioral problems associated with the drug--including hallucinations, delirium, abnormal behavior, and fatalities--have led to changes in the prescribing information for the drug. The new prescribing information will include in the Precautions section reports of behavioral changes associated with the use of Tamiflu in patients with the flu. The majority of the patients involved were children. The flu is often associated with similar neurological changes and it hasn’t been determined if the cause of these changes were the flu or the use of the drug, or a combination of these. They have also added information about the possibility of abnormal behavior in the Patient Information section and suggest that all patients be observed for such changes and that the health care provider be contacted immediately if they occur.
