NEW WARNING
Roche has issued a “Dear Healthcare Professional” letter about new drug warnings related to the immunosuppressant drug mycophenolate (CellCept). Postmarketing studies have found an increased risk of pregnancy loss and congenital malformations when the drug is used during pregnancy. There’s a new black box warning listing the risks of pregnancy loss and associated congenital abnormalities that have been reported. The Pregnancy Category for the drug has been changed from C to D. Women of childbearing age should be advised of these risks and receive contraceptive counseling, and they must use contraception while on the drug. Women planning to become pregnant shouldn’t use mycophenolate unless no other immunosuppressant drug can be used.
