NEW WARNING
The FDA has issued an alert regarding the possibility of QT prolongation when using the antipsychotic drug haloperidol (Haldol, Haldol Decanoate, Haldol Lactate). New changes to the drug's label will highlight warnings that the drug's use has been associated with torsades de pointes and QT prolongation, especially when given in high doses or intravenously. The warning states that the drug isn't approved for intravenous use. The drug is commonly used intravenously, however, in off-label practice. The FDA recommends that if this drug is used intravenously, that higher doses be avoided and that other risks of prolonged QT interval be addressed (electrolyte imbalance, cardiac abnormalities, hypothyroidism, use with other drugs that cause prolonged QT intervals). This issue will continue to be studied and health care providers are advised to consider this risk and make clinical decisions on an individual basis using this information.
