NEW WARNING
Ortho-McNeil issued a “Dear Healthcare Professional” letter to alert providers to recent additions to the “WARNINGS” section of the prescribing information for their antipsychotics HALDOL and HALDOL Decanoate. The warning section now reports rare cases of sudden death in patients receiving antipsychotics, including HALDOL and HALDOL Decanoate. Prolonged QT interval, which can cause serious arrhythmias and sudden death, has been observed during treatment with these drugs. It’s advised that caution be used when using HALDOL in patients with QT-prolonging conditions, such as hypokalemia, electrolyte imbalance, known CV disease, QT syndrome, a family history of prolonged QT interval, or therapy with drugs known to prolong the QT interval. These cautions are especially important when giving the drug parenterally.
