NEW WARNING
The FDA has issued a safety alert regarding the antidiabetic drug exenatide (Byetta). Following 30 reports of acute pancreatitis in patients taking exenatide, health care professionals are being advised to tell patients taking this drug to seek immediate medical treatment if they develop unexplained, persistent, severe abdominal pain, which may or may not be accompanied by vomiting. If pancreatitis is suspected, exenatide should be discontinued and shouldn't be restarted unless an alternative etiology for the pancreatitis can be established. Amylin Pharmaceuticals has agreed to add this information to the Precautions section of the prescribing information.
