NEW WARNING
Tibotec Therapeutics issued a "Dear Health Care Professional" letter about updates to prescribing information for their antiretroviral drug etravirine (Intelence). Existing warnings have been strengthened to reflect postmarketing reports of death caused by toxic epidermal necrolysis and hypersensitivity reactions, which are sometimes accompanied by hepatic failure. Etravirine should be stopped immediately if severe skin or hypersensitivity reactions occur. Etravirine is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-experienced adult patients, who have evidence of viral replication and HIV-1 strains resistant to NNRIs and other antiretroviral agents.
