NEW WARNING
Roche has issued a "Dear Healthcare Professional" letter to further clarify changes that were made to the prescribing information for their antibiotic ceftriaxone (Rocephin). Following reports of fatal interactions between calcium containing infusions and infused ceftriaxone, particularly in neonates 28 days and younger, changes were made to the prescribing information, including contraindications for the use in neonates ages 28 days and younger who are also receiving a calcium containing IV infusion. The new information further clarifies the risk to include parenteral nutrition products containing calcium and extends the warning to co-administration of calcium containing solutions and ceftriaxone in any patient, regardless of age, even if using different infusion lines and sites. Roche encourages all prescribers to become familiar with these warnings to protect patients from inadvertent adverse reactions.
