NEW WARNING
Genentech has issued a “Dear Health Care Provider” letter to bring attention to new safety information regarding their monoclonal antibody bevacizumab (Avastin). Post-marketing studies have shown an increased incidence of tracheoesophageal fistula in patients also receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy for limited-stage small cell lung cancer. Because of the small number of involved patients, a causal relationship isn’t known. Genentech reminds providers that bevacizumab isn’t approved for use in small cell lung cancer. Avastin is approved for metastatic colorectal cancer with I.V. fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy and as first-line treatment of patients with unresectable, locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer with carboplatin and paclitaxel.
