When blood backflow stops

During insertion of a peripheral venous catheter, a steady flashback of blood in the chamber indicates a successful vein entry. If blood backflow stops when you remove the stylet, the cannula may have passed through the opposite wall of the vein. To save the vein, leave the tourniquet in place and retract the cannula slightly until blood backflow resumes, indicating that you've pulled the tip back into the lumen. Then quickly advance the cannula into the vein, and promptly remove the tourniquet. Never try to reinsert the stylet because doing so may damage the cannula.
