To ensure successful vein selection, choose the patient's nondominant arm whenever possible. Choose a vein above areas of flexion to reduce the risk of dislodging the catheter from the insertion site. The vein should be large enough to allow adequate blood flow around the catheter. Finally, be sure the insertion site isn't contraindicated by upcoming surgery, another procedure, or physical or occupational therapy. |
