Giving drugs through an implanted vascular access port

Surgically placed beneath a patient's skin, an implanted vascular access port (VAP) permits intermittent long-term delivery of I.V. drugs, I.V. fluids, total parenteral nutrition, or blood products through a central venous line. The VAP can be used immediately after placement. But edema and tenderness may persist for about 72 hours, making the device difficult to palpate and slightly uncomfortable for the patient. Place an ice pack over the area for several minutes to alleviate discomfort from the needle puncture.
