Flushing a Groshong catheter If your patient has a Groshong catheter, you don’t need heparin flush solution. Because of the Groshong catheter’s pressure-sensitive valve, flush with 5 ml of sterile normal saline solution every 7 days. If the patient is receiving highly viscous fluids or if blood samples were drawn through the catheter, flush with 20 ml of the sodium chloride solution to prevent crystallization of the catheter tip. Be sure to follow facility policy. |
