Drug absorption in geriatric patients

Several age-related changes in the gastrointestinal (GI) system can affect drug absorption. Decreased gastric acidity may affect a drug's solubility and alter its absorption. Reduced blood flow to the GI tract and mucosal atrophy can also delay absorption. However, because GI transit time is slowed, drugs remain in the system longer, which increases absorption. The effects of aging slow the absorption rate, but absorption is as complete as it is in a younger patient.
