Tips on dilating veins

Use the following tips to help cause venous dilation and make veins more accessible:
  • Use gravity; lower the site below the heart.
  • Encourage patient to tighten his fist or tense his arm muscles but remind him to relax during insertion.
  • Apply warm, moist heat on the extremity for 15 to 20 minutes before insertion.
  • Gently tap the vein.
  • Use a blood pressure cuff to obtain tourniquet effect.
  • Gently rub the extremity in a direction away from the tourniquet.
