The following chart compares tip location, dwell times, and the types of solutions that may be used with midclavicular, midline, and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs).

Type of catheter	Tip location	Dwell time	Delivery of therapies
Midclavicular	Peripherally inserted with tip placement in proximal axillary or subclavian vein	2 to 3 months	I.V. fluids, blood products, peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN), electrolytes, and prescribed medications
Midline	Peripherally inserted with tip placement in proximal portion of extremity	2 to 4 weeks	I.V. fluids, blood products, PPN, electrolytes, and prescribed medications
PICC	Peripherally inserted with tip placement in superior vena cava	1 year	Total parenteral nutrition, vesicant chemotherapy, and all other fluids
